I used to be a pharmaceutical scientist, and with a PhD in chemistry I spoke in the same way most scientists do when there’s talk of astrology…..‘Pseudoscience’, ‘Nonsense’! But I don’t think that way any more. In fact, after lots of research and much contemplation I am convinced - 100% - that the stars, the planets, the Sun and the Moon influence our lives.

The effect comes in 2 main ways. Firstly, the Sun sends constant streams of charged particles towards the Earth. This is known as the Solar Wind and it rattles the magnetic part of our atmosphere, causing what we know of as the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. Sometimes there’s not just a steady stream, though, but a burst of particles from the Sun. When this happens, which it often does, we get more rattling and the result is a magnetic storm. And here’s where it gets interesting. Magnetic storms have now been shown to affect our biology. Already scientists have measured the effects of magnetic storms on the heart and on the hormone melatonin, and there are undoubtedly more effects that we haven’t even begun to start looking for yet. And guess what heavenly bodies can cause, or affect magnetic storms? Yes, you guessed it. The planets and the Moon!

So the cosmic cycles of the planets and the Moon have an effect upon our biology. And since these ancient cycles are guaranteed to continue for eons, you can wholeheartedly say that cosmic cycles influence us. There’s destiny in that. If you knew that a particular alignment of planets was going to occur in, say, 12 years, 3 months, 1 day, 7 hours, 9 minutes and 5 seconds time then you could talk of destiny when you say that our biology will experience a tweak caused by that alignment.

The second way, which is the way of astrology, is that the planets and stars have myths associated with them, which have become archetypes – ancient symbols deep in the human psyche. As the planets move against the backdrop of the constellations of the zodiac, stories plays out as myths of the planets fuse with myths of constellations. Over a number of years, as a planet moves through several different constellations, its myth (personality), is coloured by the stories of each constellation it passes through. In other words, Uranus will be coloured by Taurus for a while and by Scorpio for another period of time. So Uranus’s personality will different while it’s in Taurus from when it’s in Scorpio. The question is, does this affect us? Of course it does! We detect cosmic movements and interpret the myths (symbols) at an unconscious level, and what we detect can influence out behaviour. Hypnosis, for instance, shows that unconscious suggestions affect our behaviour. Similarly, experiments in psychology have shown that we pick up information unconsciously and it influences our behaviour.

Advertisers rely on it to sell their products so that you, for instance, just feel drawn to a new type of washing up liquid. Astrology looks at the symbols, or stories, in the sky and interprets their meaning. It does not say that ‘such and such a thing will happen on such and such a date’. Instead it shows that during certain periods of our lives there will be different influences in our lives, which is the symbolic effect of a particular planet (personality) as it moves through a particular constellation. Astrology is as real as
any other science!
